Tshwane gets its name basics right

Wednesday, June 4, 2014

Pretoria – Tshwane residents are being given a chance to reshape their city by helping officials to identify misspelt and derogatory geographical names.

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will this week host a number of workshops to allow the public to participate in the process of identifying and correcting wrongly spelt geographical names, derogatory names and propose new names.

The workshops, which are part of a bid to speed up the processes of standardisation of geographical names in Gauteng, have been organised by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the Gauteng Geographical Names Committee, in partnership with the City of Tshwane and local municipalities.

Today’s workshop is being held at the Soshanguve Gymnasium from 10am.

On Thursday, a workshop will be held at 10am at Stanza Bopape in Mamelodi.

According to the department, it has targeted 200 people per session, which will involve local municipalities and community-based organisations.

The focus of both workshops will be on the identification and correction of wrongly spelt names, derogatory names and proposed new names, as well as issues of standardization.

“It will also look into the procedures that are to be followed in the changing of names,” said the department. – SAnews.gov.za
