Pretoria - An investigation into allegations of maladministration in the department has been welcomed by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Lechesa Tsenoli.

On Wednesday, President Jacob Zuma authorised a probe into allegations of serious maladministration within the Cogta department.

Zuma signed a proclamation directing the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate, amongst others, claims of maladministration in connection with the affairs of Cogta, improper or unlawful conduct by the officials of the department, unlawful appropriation of public money and intentional or negligent use of public money.

“The Director-General of Cooperative Governance made this request to the SIU and as the law requires the President thankfully accepted this request. We look forward to a rigorous investigation that will enable the Department to take legal action and institute other remedies as may be required”, said Tsenoli on Friday.

Corruption and maladministration, said the minister, set the country back.

“We recognise the need to address these serious allegations, so that the Department can continue to provide leadership and set an example in good governance,” said Tsenoli.

The allegations to be investigated by the SIU relate to the appointment of a service provider to provide technical support and administrative services in respect of the Ward Based Co-operatives Programme of Cogta and payments made by the department in a manner that was allegedly not fair, competitive, transparent, equitable or cost-effective. - SAnews.gov.za
