Transport calls for investigation into Cape Town train arson

Tuesday, April 23, 2019

Transport Minister Dr Blade Nzimande has called on law enforcement agencies to investigate the torching of two Metrorail trains in Cape Town.

“Minister Nzimande calls upon law enforcement agencies to urgently investigate and arrest perpetrators of this unfortunate, senseless and well-orchestrated destruction of property through acts of criminality and sabotage of Metrorail,” said the Department of Transport.

The two trains were torched at Platform 12 at Cape Town Station on Sunday.

Nzimande said a sinister force is trying to destroy the country’s rail system.

The Minister said arson destroys not only train carriages but also cripples the entire passenger rail system and inconveniences communities and commuters.

“Many workers end up being unable to go to work, losing daily wages and ultimately losing their jobs and causing more social distress and further burdening of many poor households and communities,” said the department. - SAnews.gov.za
