Soweto - All Metrorail trains dedicated to transport mourners to FNB Stadium, where the official Memorial Service for former President Nelson Mandela will be held, are running on schedule.

Metrorail spokesperson in Gauteng, Lilian Mofokeng, said the trains started running to the Calabash stadium at 5am.

“I can confirm that all trains made available to transport mourners to the memorial service are on schedule,” she said on Tuesday morning.

Metrorail has made available 41 trains to ferry mourners from different parts of Gauteng to the stadium at no cost. The trains have the capacity to transport a maximum of 80 000 people to the venue.

The trains will also be available to ferry mourners to the overflow venues at Ellis Park Stadium, Orlando Stadium and Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto. No private vehicles are allowed into the FNB Stadium precinct.

Mofokeng said the first train arrived at FNB Stadium at 5.55am, while the last train will depart from FNB Stadium after the conclusion of the memorial service.

The trains will pick up mourners from Mabopane, north of Pretoria, Ekurhuleni and Vereeniging. Other stations include Leralla, Pienaarspoort and Germiston.

Mourners can also board the trains from Naledi in Soweto, Randfontein and Saulsville in Atteridgeville to travel to FNB Stadium. - SAnews.gov.za
