Pretoria - Team South Africa has scooped 31 medals at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi so far, with the swimmers having earned seven gold medals.

Swimmers Chad le Clos, Natalie du Toit and Cameron van der Burgh all won gold, while Chris Harmse won gold in the men's hammer event, Sunette Viljoen won gold in the women's javelin and in bowls Tracy-Lee Botha, Susanna Nel and Susanna Steyn and Gidion Vermeulen, Johan Du Plessis and Wayne Perry won gold in the women's and men's bowls events, said Sascoc.

Sascoc also reported that Team South Africa had won 11 silver medals in the wrestling, swimming, gymnastics, para athletics and athletics events and nine bronze in swimming wrestling archery and athletics.

South Africa opened their Sevens rugby programme on Monday with a smooth 29-7 win over Tonga on Monday. Their main group opponents, Wales, were too good for India, sweeping past the hosts to win 56-7.

Meanwhile, Sascoc Chef de Mission Patience Shikwambana has cleared swimmer Roland Schoeman of any breach of conduct.

Schoeman false started in Friday's men's 50m freestyle semi-final because of crowd noise. When asked by international media about the reason for the false start he reportedly said a member in the audience was acting like a monkey.

The swimmer met with Shikwambana on Friday night, where he explained that he had been frustrated at the noise and there had been no malice or a racist reference.

Shikwambana said she had accepted the sincerity of his explanation.

"Given the media enquiries there definitely has been a misinterpretation of what he said. We consider the matter dealt with and Roland's focus now is on winning a medal in the final on Saturday evening," said Shikwambana.

Schoeman, South Africa's most celebrated Commonwealth Games medalist, is aiming to improve on his record of 10 medals.
