Telling her story like it is

Tuesday, August 2, 2016

Pretoria – Women from all walks of life must use the month of August to share their stories as part of the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March.

August is recognised as Women’s Month in South Africa, which pays tribute to the brave women of 1956 who dared to stand up against oppressive pass laws.

The Department of Women has encouraged women to use the hashtag #TellHerStory to tell their stories as a lead up to the celebrations of Women's Day on 9 August.

The #TellHerStory campaign is part of the countdown towards this year’s Women’s Day, which will be commemorated at the Union Buildings.

An 8-day countdown campaign has already moved people to action on social media platforms.

“Government will be telling the #TellHerStory on the following platforms: YouTube on the channel GovZA, Twitter on @GovernmentZA, @Dept_of_Women and on the webpage: www.gov.za from 1 August 2016,” said the department.

The public is invited to join in the online conversation to share their knowledge about the historical march.

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Susan Shabangu will lead an interdenominational prayer in Mankweng, Polokwane, on Thursday. The prayer will signify unity in prayer for the prosperity of South Africa.

On Friday, Minister Shabangu will also host a dialogue in Tshwane with women activists, who have been active in the struggle during the landmark periods of 1956, 1976 and 2016.

In preparation for the main celebrations on 9 August, President Jacob Zuma has established an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to plan and coordinate the historic 60th anniversary, led by Minister Shabangu.

A number of activities will take place throughout the month of August to mark the 60th anniversary celebrations. To stay informed of these activities, follow at @GCISMedia, @SAGovNews, @Dept_of_Women and the South African Government website.
