Pretoria – The Western Cape Department of Health has activated a response team after a number of Enteroviral Meningitis cases were reported in the province.

The cases were reported in Mossel Bay, between 1 December and 24 January 2016.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and is caused by either a bacterial or viral infection.

“All cases are being treated successfully, without any loss of life. No new cases have been reported in the past two days,” the department said.

The province is monitoring the situation to contain the spread of the disease. – SAnews.gov.za
