Supra Mahumapelo elected premier of NW

Pretoria - Supra Mahumapelo was on Wednesday elected unopposed as Premier of the North West province.

Mahumapelo was nominated and elected following the 32 Members of the Provincial Legislature taking their oath or affirmation.

He takes over from former Premier Thandi Modise, who was not able to make today’s proceedings and will be sworn in at a later stage.

Mahumapelo previously served as the African National Congress (ANC) provincial chairperson.

Susan Tsebe was elected unopposed to the position of Speaker of the provincial legislature.

The ANC in the North West expressed confidence in Mahumapelo.

“We have full confidence in the leadership skills and capacity of Comrade Supra Mahumapelo to lead the North West government,” said the ANC provincial secretary Dakota Legoete.

Out of the 33 seats, the African National Congress has 23 seats followed by Economic Freedom Fighters with five seats, Democratic Alliance with four seats and one seat for the Freedom Front Plus.

Members of the North West provincial executive council will be announced on Monday. - SAnews.gov.za
