Struggle stalwart Mendi Msimang will be buried on Saturday at a Special Official Funeral that will be open to the public to attend, says the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on State Funerals.

The funeral service for the struggle stalwart, who passed away on Monday and was a former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, will be held at the Christian Revival Church (CRC) in Tshwane.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa has accorded Mr Msimang a Special Official Funeral Category 1, which entails elements of military ceremonial honours in line with the policy on State and Provincial official funerals,” said the IMC, which met on Wednesday.

All protocols related to Category 1 Official Funerals will be followed.

“The funeral service is open to the public to attend,” said the IMC.

The IMC urged mourners who would like to send messages of condolence to the family to make use of condolence books placed at the Union Buildings, Parliament, embassies abroad and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation. Members of the public can also email messages to condolences@gcis.gov.za.

The IMC thanked South Africans and the international community for their support and messages of comfort to the Msimang family and friends.

The funeral service for the late recipient of the Order for Meritorious Service in Silver, who passed away following an extended illness at the age of 78, will get underway at 8am.
