Stricter hygiene measures at Gauteng Hospita

Pretoria - Stricter hygiene codes would be imposed at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, where six babies died after contracting diarrhoea at the weekend.

Briefing media on Wednesday, Provisional Health and Social Development MEC Qedani Mahlangu sent condolences to the families of the children who died, adding that stricter measures would be enforced at all Gauteng hospitals.

She said the results of the preliminary tests to establish the exact cause for the sickness were still not available but it was suspected that an infection came from outside of the hospital.

Other babies in the ward had been temporarily relocated to another ward in the hospital.

Meanwhile, power has been restored at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital following a power outage for the past two days due to cable theft.

Department spokesperson, Mandla Sidu dismissed media reports that the power outage at the hospital was due to the cash flow problems.

"The hospital has been without electricity due to cable theft not cash flow problems and had run out of diesel to power the generators," Sidu said.

During the power outage, the hospital management had to reschedule some elective surgeries and ambulances had to be diverted to nearby health facilities as the hospital was not admitting new patients.
