Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Pretoria - Statistician-General Pali Lehohla says although there are challenges that lie ahead Census 2011, he is confident the census will be carried out without major hindrances.

"I'm confident about the census. This will be better than the 2001 Census," he said at a media briefing, adding that Statistics South Africa was about to conclude the training of enumerators.

Census 2011, which will cost the country R3 billion, will be conducted from 10 - 31 October 2011.

A total of 2.8 million posters bearing images of the enumerators and their contact details will be distributed. The posters are part of the 'Know your enumerator' campaign. They will be put up on street poles in the areas where the enumerators will be deployed.

According to Lehohla, 156 000 unemployed people will assist with the census. About 120 000 people will be involved in counting.

Stats SA says people will be deployed in communities in which they reside, and that they will be given letters signed by the Statistician-General.

If people are in doubt about the legitimacy of an enumerator, they can call the toll free number: 0800 110 248 to verify them.

Stats SA enumerators will wear yellow bibs during the census. Legitimacy of enumerators can also be checked via identity cards with photos and identification numbers, to which the public will have access.

Lehohla warned that those who restrict statisticians from doing their work will face a six-month jail term or a R10 000 fine or both.

The results of the Census are expected in November 2012. - BuaNews
