Pretoria – Award-winning artists like DJ Black Coffee, Zahara, Toya Delazy, Mafikizolo, DJ CNDO, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Salif Keita and Kurt Darren are part of the line-up at the inaugural Nelson Mandela Sports and Culture Day on August 18.

Other artists include David Jenkins, Mahotella Queens, Umoja, Gcina Mhlophe, DJ Alessandro, Wouter Kellerman, Naima Mclean, Elvis Blue and 1st Project.

Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile today announced the artists who will perform on Sunday.

The Nelson Mandela Sports and Culture Day is dedicated to celebrating Madiba’s legacy.

The former statesman turned 95 on July 18. Doctors say Madiba, who has been in hospital since June 8, is still in a critical condition although his health is steadily improving.

Mashatile on Monday called on South Africans to continue to celebrate the life of Mandela.

“As we continue to celebrate the life of former President Mandela, we will do so in order to re-commit ourselves to the ideals he dedicated all his life towards achieving.

“It is these noble values that continue to guide us as we seek to build a national democratic society that is truly united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous,” Mashatile said, adding that South Africans should continue praying for Madiba.

“As Madiba lies in hospital, we continue to keep him in our prayers and thoughts.”

On August 18, prior to the music concert, a rugby and a soccer match will take place.

Former Bafana Bafana captain and current captain of The Legends, Lucas Radebe, said he was looking forward to the soccer match.

“Music and football play a great role in unifying the country. As a country, we are lucky to have him with us as our icon,” he said.

Bafana Bafana will take on Burkina Faso, while the Springboks will play Argentina. The matches will be preceded by a match between South Africa's soccer legends.

The proceeds will go towards building the Nelson Mandela children's hospital in Gauteng. – SAnews.gov.za
