Spot check reveals Tembisa Hospital's challenges

Pretoria - Overcrowded wards, medical staff shortage and insufficient medical records storage are among the many challenges facing Tembisa Hospital.

This was revealed on Wednesday when Gauteng Premier David Makhura went on a surprise inspection at the hospital. The spot check was part of the Gauteng government’s new strategy of tackling service delivery challenges in public institutions in the province.

Tembisa Hospital provides services to over 2.5 million patients a year. It also accommodates patients from Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, which puts a strain on its limited resources.

During the visit, Premier Makhura, who was accompanied by Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu, said the sting operation was the beginning of many spot checks of this nature. He said the provincial government was introducing the ‘active cabinet’ style of doing business.

“This means, provincial government officials and MECs will now spend more time in communities that are facing difficulties in accessing government services, with the view to find lasting solutions.

“We want to make sure that our public servants are conducting themselves in a professional manner when dispensing their services to our people. We will continue to conduct these spot checks in police stations, traffic licence centres and all the relevant hot spots in order to improve service delivery,” said Premier Makhura. – SAnews.gov.za
