Special send-off for the late Sefotlhelo

The late Solomon Mosala Sefotlhelo is to receive a Special Provincial Official Funeral.

Sefotlhelo, affectionately known as Andy, passed away on 1 November 2018.

A statement by the Presidency on Thursday announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Provincial Official Funeral.

The funeral will take place on Friday at Dr Rantlai Petrus Molemela Stadium indoor facilities in Mangaung. Proceedings will start at 8am.

A former member of the Free State Legislature, Sefotlhelo was a committed freedom fighter, who was imprisoned on Robben Island prison.

Under the command of the late Chris Hani, he was tasked to establish the first African National Congress underground area political committee in the then Orange Free State.

He was arrested in 1981 and sentenced to five years on Robben Island prison for underground uMkhonto weSizwe activities.

Sefotlhelo was appointed the first provincial coordinator of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) in the Orange Free State upon his release from prison in 1986.

He was also a founding member and served as a National Executive Committee member of the South African Youth Congress (SAYCO), which later became the African National Congress Youth League.

President Ramaphosa has ordered that the National Flag be flown at half-mast at every flag station in the Free State province on the day of the funeral service. – SAnews.gov.za
