Pretoria – The City of Ekurhuleni has condemned Monday’s attack on its main office building in Germiston, in which 60 protestors were arrested.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson, Sam Modiba, said the city would “deal decisively with any rogue elements who plan to destabilise the municipality”.
A group of about 100 protestors, calling themselves military veterans, stormed the building at the Germiston Civic Centre and started vandalising it and looting on Monday morning.
The group is believed to have slipped into the building unnoticed and made its way to the offices of the Speaker and Chief Whip on the ground and second floors, respectively. The building accommodates the Executive Mayor, Speaker, Chief Whip, staff and other political parties.
Ekurhuleni mayoral spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, said: “They attempted to force their way into the offices of the principals but were prevented by tight security. They then resorted to assaulting some of the staff in the process. They also vandalised the building, looted the fridges, broke some furniture and electrical equipment and stole some goods.”
The police arrested over 60 suspects, who will face among other charges theft, vandalism, trespassing and assault. – SAnews.gov.za
