SIU to probe Correctional Services

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has signed a Proclamation authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate certain matters with respect to the affairs of the Department of Correctional Services, says the Presidency.

The Presidency on Tuesday said the President signed this in terms of section 2 (1) of the Special Investigating Unit and Special Tribunals Act, 1996.

“The Proclamation authorises the SIU, amongst others, to investigate the allegations of irregularities in the procurement of an electronic monitoring system by the department and payments made in respect thereof, in a manner that was not fair, equitable, transparent and contrary to applicable legislation,” said the Presidency.

The Presidency said other allegations to be investigated include:

  • any non-performance or defective performance by service provider appointed by the department for the electronic monitoring system;
  • extension of a contract and payments made in respect therefore in a manner that was not fair, equitable, transparent and contrary to applicable legislation; and
  • improper or unlawful conduct by officials or employees of the department, the applicable service provider.
