Pretoria - The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has reassured the nation that it remains committed to fighting corruption, malpractice and maladministration, within state institutions, private sector and within the unit.
It maintained that it has a good relationship and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies including the Hawks.
“The Head of the Unit, Advocate Andy Mothibi, remains committed to uprooting corruption wherever it comes from anyone who even suspects any act or omission that may be deemed to be act of corruption should do the right thing by opening a case in terms of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act,” SIU spokesperson Nazreen Pandor said on Sunday.
This follows weekend newspaper reports that the unit, whose mandate is to provide professional forensic investigations into maladministration and corruption, has been infiltrated by rogue and unvetted officials.
With regards to the recruitment practices within the unit, Pandor said the SIU follows the existing policies and procedures which expect all staff to be vetted or screened.
All these processes, he added, are subject to internal audit and external audit by the Auditor General of South Africa.
“The SIU will continue with its current improvement strategy to ensure that we strengthen our capacity to assist the government in fighting corruption,” said Pandor.
He called in those with specific allegations to report them as the SIU adheres to the Provisions of the Protected Disclosures Act and will at no stage victimise whistle blowers.
The unit further committed to ensuring that all expenditure within the unit is incurred in accordance with Treasury Regulations. – SAnews.gov.za
