Sisulu, unions to launch Public Service Charter

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Pretoria - The Minister of Public Service and Administration, Lindiwe Sisulu, and union leaders will on Thursday launch the Public Service Charter.

The charter is a commitment between the State as the employer and labour, which seeks to, among other things, professionalise and encourage excellence in the public service and improve service delivery.

It also introduces service standards in the public service, with a call to public servants to meet and exceed them.

“With this charter, we are committing ourselves to a higher level of delivery, new ways of [serving] our people and making a call to our people to refuse bad service. They deserve the highest level of service,” Sisulu said.

The charter stems from a 2012/13 - 2014/15 wage agreement, which included a resolution that the employer will “review the Remuneration Policy of the Public Service”, while parties (labour and employer) will enter into a service charter for the public service.

Sisulu will be joined by union leaders from the SA Democratic Teachers' Union; National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union; Public Servants Association; Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union; South African Policing Union; National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa; Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa; and Health & Other Services Personnel Trade Union of South Africa.

Business community, academics, youth formations, the South African Council of Churches, South African Local Government Association representatives and various NGOs will also be attending the launch. – SAnews.gov.za
