Pretoria – Several people sustained minor injuries when strong winds blew over the marquee which was being used by the Department of Correctional Services to host the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day at the Drakenstein Correctional Centre, in Paarl, earlier today.
According to the department, five people who were attending the event, including four inmates and a member of the public, sustained minor injuries and were treated by medical staff on site.
The event was aimed at breaking the world record for the largest crochet blanket and was hosted jointly with the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
However, just two hours into the event, howling winds caused the canvas to blow off the marquee and parts of the metal structure collapsed.
The organisers have wished the injured a speedy recovery. – SAnews.gov.za
