Pretoria - North West Premier Thandi Modise has called on drivers involved in scholar transport to value the lives of their passengers and drive with extreme caution.

This follows an accident in which five people were injured in a crash involving a school bus and a bakkie on the R30 Klerksdorp-Ventersdorp road on Monday morning.

The driver of the Corsa bakkie and a female passenger, who was in the vehicle, were seriously injured.

Three learners, who were in the bus that was transporting 30 learners to school, were also rushed to hospital with minor injuries.

Twenty-seven learners were given counselling as they were in a state of shock.

Premier Modise urged road traffic management authorities to clamp down on speeding and reckless driving.

The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Raymond Elisha, who was at the scene of the accident, has instructed officials in his department to investigate the cause of the accident, including the road worthiness of the school bus. - SAnews.gov.za
