Pretoria - As South Africa's mining industry stakeholders prepare for an international road show next month, there is one message they intend taking with them: South Africa remains a good investment destination.

The stakeholders, who met on Monday under the banner of the Mining, Industry Growth and Development Task Team (MIGDETT), want to address the negative perceptions about South Africa's mining industry.

MIGDETT, which has been mandated to come up with possible solutions to make the mining industry competitive and sustainable, identified the negative perceptions investor circles worldwide have about the country's mining industry as a major constraint.

The international roadshow, which is expected to take place in early March in Canada and the USA, will be MIGDETT's chance to put to bed these perceptions. Minerals and Resources Minister Susan Shabangu is expected to be part of the initiative.

At their meeting on Monday, MIGDETT also discussed the State of the Nation Address and its implication for the mining sector mining sector, particularly the call by the President Jacob Zuma for all stakeholders to work together to achieve the goal of creating jobs.

"Through the MIGDETTT process, the industry is proud that its collaboration has led to many achievements to date and can reach its true potential in addressing the challenges that we currently face. One of these achievements has been the growth strategy for the sector which is unprecedented," said Advocate Sandile Nogxina, convener of MIDGETT.

Another key issue discussed was Global Climate Change and its implications for developing countries in the mining environment.

The meeting agreed to work together in developing a position paper for the industry which would be further presented to the National Planning Commission at the beginning of March.
