Pretoria - The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has welcomed the sentencing of a man who falsified his number plates to avoid paying for e-tolls.

Dr Stoyen Stoychev has been sentenced to six months in prison or alternatively he can pay a R20 000 fine for the fraudulant activities he committed from 10 March 2014 to 2 October 2014.

In addition, Stoychev has to perform 100 hours of community service at the SPCA.

His sentence has been suspended on condition that he pay his e-toll debt.

He also needs to make sure that he is not convicted in future of the same offence and he must reimburse all expenses he ran up for the person whose license number he cloned.

“We thank the police and the National Prosecuting Authority. Justice has been served,” Sanral said after the sentence was handed down in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

The agency said evading e-tolls is a criminal offence.

“We are happy with the outcome of the case and that the sentence reflects the seriousness of the offence,” Sanral said. – SAnews.gov.za
