Pretoria - South African Airways (SAA) acting CEO Vuyisile Kona has been placed on precautionary suspension.

“The board of directors of SAA announces that after careful consideration of recent developments, it has decided to place the acting CEO, Mr. Vuyisile Kona, on precautionary suspension.

“This is based on certain allegations that have come to the attention of the board, in respect of which the board has a fiduciary duty to investigate,” said the national carrier on Monday.

The suspension was effective as of Monday, said the board, adding that it had not come to any conclusion regarding the allegations.

CEO of Mango, Nico Bezuidenhout, has been requested to oversee the group's operations.

“The board has embarked on a process to recruit a permanent chief executive officer. Applications have been received, and the board is now in the process of evaluation,” said SAA.

The board is confident that the process will be completed by 31 March this year, at which time recommendations will be presented to Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba. - SAnews.gov.za
