South Africa will on Thursday join the international community in commemorating World TB Day.
The day is an opportunity for affected people and the communities in which they live, governments, civil society organisations, health care providers and international partners to call for further action to reach people who have been infected with TB.
It aims to create awareness and facilitate activities in an attempt to prevent and treat the disease.
Deputy President David Mabuza, who is also the chairperson of the South African AIDS Council (SANAC), will lead the day’s event, which will be held at Cator Crest Sports Field in Mayville, KwaZulu-Natal.
This year's commemoration will be held under the theme ‘Unite to end TB & HIV - South African leaders taking action’.
“The event seeks to mobilise and encourage leaders of society such as members of legislatures, councillors, traditional leaders, business and religious leaders and civil society at large to commit to the fight against TB and HIV,” the Presidency said on Tuesday.
The event is aimed at mobilising communities to adopt practices that minimise the risk of TB and HIV infection.
Deputy President Mabuza will be accompanied by Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu, SANAC sector leaders, traditional leaders and international partners. - SAnews.gov.za
