SA jointly celebrates World Food Day, Post Day

Pretoria - This year's World Food Day and World Post Day will be jointly celebrated today at Muyexe Village, in Limpopo.

As part of efforts to achieve an integrated approach to service delivery, the Departments of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), Communications (DOC), and the Limpopo provincial Department of Agriculture in partnership with the South African Post Office (SAPO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have organised the national events.

Muyexe village is one of the key presidential priority areas earmarked for the Comprehensive Rural Development Programme (CRDP).

The main objective of World Food Day is to create awareness of the fight against hunger. This year World Food Day is commemorated under the theme, "Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis".

The day kicked-off with DAFF Minister Tina Joemat- Petersson together with first lady, Sizakele Khumalo, MEC of the LDA, Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba, and FAO representative, Rosebud Kurwijila, setting up a tower garden.

A tower garden is a small upright garden that can be watered using gray water. Gray water refers to the water that has already been used for domestic purposes, such as washing of dishes and clothes.

These gardens are good for older people, as they do not need to bend down a lot and can be made anywhere close to a home.

Later in the day, the DOC in partnership with the SAPO and Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) will roll out a postal address system for the village to commemorate World Post Day.

The event will be held under the theme: "Postal service for Green Growth." This theme is in line with universal efforts to raise awareness about the threat posed by global warming, and to urge all citizens of the world to play a role in saving the planet.

The collaboration of the two departments, provincial and local government will give credence to CRDP.

Minister of Communications General Siphiwe Nyanda is expected to deliver a key note address highlighting the significance of the Post Office in bringing essential services closer to the people in a bid to improve their living conditions.

The Deputy Minister of Communications, Dina Pule, Director General, Mamodupi Mohlala and Post Office board Chairperson Vuyo Mahlati will also be in attendance.
