Sunday, April 25, 2010

Pretoria - South Africa will host the BASIC Ministerial Climate Change meeting on Monday in Cape Town.

The BASIC group comprises of Environment Ministers from South Africa, India, China and Brazil.

This will be the second BASIC Ministerial meeting to take place since the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) in Copenhagen the Department of Environmental Affairs said on Sunday.

The first meeting was convened in New Delhi, India, in January this year, where they re-emphasised their commitment to working together with all other countries to ensure an agreed outcome at COP 16 in Mexico later this year.

"This BASIC meeting seeks to build on the discussions of the January meeting, reflect on developments in February, March and April and inform the BASIC's strategy for the forthcoming UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meetings and other strategic meetings such as the Major Economies Forum," the department said.

Representatives from various South African Government Departments are also expected to attend.
