SA gears up for Reconciliation Day

,Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma is expected address the National Day of Reconciliation commemoration event at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, in Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape, on Wednesday.

“The National Day of Reconciliation is observed annually on the calendar to unify formerly segregated communities and to build a socially coherent society in South Africa,” the Presidency said.

The day, 16 December, will be celebrated under the theme: “Bridging the Divide: Building a Common South African Nationhood towards a National Developmental State”.

It promotes and is entrenched on constitutional democracy, unity in diversity, inclusive and social justice as well as non-racialism, non-tribalism and non-sexism.

Other principles the day promotes included social solidarity, civic responsibility, national consciousness as well as intergroup and community co-operation. – SAnews.gov.za
