SA clinches five medals

Pretoria - Team South Africa has nabbed five medals at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

On Tuesday, Natalie du Toit and Chad le Clos won gold in the women's 50m freestyle event and men's 200m butterfly while Richard Addinall and Bella-Lufa Hughes won silver in wrestling events.

A bronze medal was earned by the men's 4x100m freestyle relay team made up of Graeme Moore, Gideon Louw, Roland Schoeman and Darian Townsend.

Du Toit won in 29.17, which is a new Games Record, but she was closely followed by Australia's Annebelle Williams. The win completed a treble for du Toit, who won the event in Manchester in 2002 and Melbourne in 2006.

According to Sascoc, du Toit is swimming in her final Commonwealth Games and is expected to retire after the 2012 London Olympics.

In netball, England crushed South Africa's medal prospects on Tuesday with a comprehensive 54-36 win. The spread on an English win was 19 points.

All the South African wrestlers were in action on Tuesday, as are the men's hockey team against Canada, while South Africa also has an interest in lawn bowls, archery, table tennis, gymnastics and cycling. The results of these events are not available yet.

Events on Wednesday

Cameron van der Burgh and Roland Schoeman are expected to swim in final events this afternoon.

South Africa's men's hockey plays New Zealand this evening, Bernard Esthuizen will participate in a cycle event and wrestler Dean van Zyl will battle it out for a bronze medal.

Siphiwe Lusizi is the only boxer in action on Wednesday, the Archery trio of Nico Benade, Septimus Cilliers and Jacobus de Wet take aim in the afternoon, Jennifer Khwela and Ashleigh Heldsinger are in the gymnastics finals and Mona Pretorius is in the final of the 58kg weightlifting.
