Roads around Grand parade closed to traffic

Pretoria – The City of Cape Town has warned of road closures around the Grand Parade in the city centre ahead of an inter-faith service this afternoon.

Crowds of mourners have gathered in the area to pay their respects following the passing of former President Nelson Mandela on Thursday night.

“The City of Cape Town is doing its utmost to ensure that residents are afforded the opportunity to mourn the loss of former president Nelson Mandela in a dignified manner.

“It is anticipated that the Grand Parade will serve as a gathering space during this period of mourning and the relevant roads will be closed during this time,” said the city in a statement on Friday.

Any unauthorised vehicles parked in the immediate vicinity will be required to move.

The following roads will be temporarily closed and/or restricted to vehicular traffic:

- Adderley Street between Bureau and Strand

- Castle Street between Strand and Darling

- Church Street between Adderley and Burg

- Corporation Street between Darling and Longmarket and Longmarket and Caledon

- Darling Street between Adderley and Plein and Plein and Buitenkant and Buitenkant and Tennant

- Hout Street between Burg and Adderley

- Longmarket Street between Burg and Plein and Plein and Corporation

- Lower Plein Street between Strand and Darling and Castle and Darling

- Parade Street between Darling and Longmarket and Longmarket and Caledon

- Parliament Street between Darling and Longmarket

- Plein Street between Darling and Longmarket

- Sir Lowry Road between Tennant and Darling

The city said the closures would have an impact on traffic flow and motorists are asked to please plan their trips accordingly.
