The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has assured citizens and the greater international community that they will know who the new president of Zimbabwe is by Saturday, 4 August.

This after the country's historic general election on Monday, the first since independence 37 years ago in which Robert Mugabe is not a candidate for president.

The assurance from the ZEC comes after much uncertainty around the exact date on which the election results will be announced.

ZEC Commissioner Qhubani Moyo has told the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) that he does not foresee anything which may hinder them from officially announcing the result on or before 4 August.

“We are supposed to announce the presidential results within five days after the elections, and certainly we will deliver that. By the 4th August, Zimbabweans and the world would know from the Commission who is the president of Zimbabwe," he said.

"We are very confident that we have put systems in place for the transmission of the results, such that we will be able to announce by the 4th, it could actually be earlier than the 4th.” - NNN-SABC
