Remembering Nelson Mandela

Tuesday, December 5, 2017

Today marks four years since the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela.

On this day four years ago, the world learned the news of the passing of the global icon and struggle veteran on 5 December 5, 2013.  He died at the age of 95 after battling a recurring lung infection.

In memory of the father of the nation, the Nelson Mandela Foundation intends to host an event today to celebrate the life and times of Madiba.

The foundation is set to unveil the first Nelson Mandela Centenary project – the Unthreading Mandela Exhibition.

The event will be addressed by the United Democratic Movement’s Bantu Holomisa and Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe, who is the chairperson of government’s Inter-Ministerial Committee on Nelson Mandela’s Centenary.

Freedom Park will also remember Madiba’s legacy of peace and nation building by hosting a reconciliation interfaith prayer and human chain event today. The objective of the event is to encourage individuals and communities to take responsibility for peace and unity.

More than 1 000 participants from civic organisations, youth groups, interfaith groups, neighbouring communities and many other stakeholders are expected to join the human peace chain.

The event is themed ‘Count on Me, together moving a non-violent South Africa forward’.

Government is planning centenary celebrations for the late international statesman and first President of a free and democratic South Africa, which will take place next year.
