Registration opens for ABET schools

Mbombela - People in Mpumalanga who were unable to complete their schooling are being urged to register early for next year's Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) classes.

Registration for 2011 takes place from 4 October to 18 November, said provincial education spokesman Jasper Zwane on Wednesday.

"ABET is available to adults who want to finish their basic education," he said.

Zwane said there were an estimated 3.3 million illiterate adults in South Africa and that Mpumalanga's education department had made it a priority to combat illiteracy in the province through programmes like ABET schools.

He added that the earlier people registered for the 2011 year, the better prepared the ABET centres would be to accommodate them.

The programme is outcomes-based and will provide students with basic learning tools, knowledge and skills, as well as nationally recognised qualifications.

Interested individuals may register from Mondays to Thursdays at all public adult learning centres, which are located in mainstream schools.

Those interested in registering can call (013) 708-5027 / 766-0734 / 801-5173 for further information.
