Pretoria - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has praised the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) after it received an unqualified audit report for the 2010/11 financial year.
The minister welcomed the progress PSIRA had made with regards to sound cooperate governance and management, adding that the security industry was an important sector.
"We are aware of the massive turbulent periods that PSIRA went through in the past, but are satisfied to note the positive developments and progress that have been achieved thus far, more importantly from a good corporate governance perspective," Mthethwa said.
He urged PSIRA to work harder to build on these positive gains.
"The challenge going forward is to transform this industry in line with the perspectives of safety in this country," Mthethwa added.
PSIRA CEO Manabela Chauke was grateful for the minister's support.
"It has been a challenging few years but we remained positive and worked hard. To a large extent we want to thank and appreciate the support and the intervention made by the Minister of Police, Honourable Nathi Mthethwa who appointed a new Council at the beginning of last year to turnaround the Authority," he said.
According to Chauke, PSIRA's council and management has received praise, from among others, the Portfolio Committee on Police, for the milestone it has achieved.
To build on the achievement, PSIRA's council plans to focus on industry stewardship, stakeholder and customer relationship management.
The council has identified weaknesses where control needs to be tightened and performance improved. It also intends improving financial management and funding.
