Probe into allegedly drunk school principal underway

Pretoria - The Gauteng Department of Education has launched an investigation into a primary school principal, who allegedly came to work under the influence of alcohol.

The officials were alerted by a tip-off from Lead SA. When confronted by department officials on Tuesday, the principal left the school. However, when he returned to fetch his car, officials were waiting for him.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Charles Phahlane said they view such unprofessional conduct in a very serious light as it compromises the provision of quality education.

"The investigations are at an advanced stage and the department will provide further information when these are completed. If these allegations are proved to be true, the department will not hesitate to charge him," Phahlane said.

Yusuf Abramjee from Lead SA thanked Education MEC Barbara Creecy and her officials for moving with speed on the matter.

"We will continue to stand up, do the right thing and make a difference," said Abramjee.
