Pretoria - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu has paid tribute to those who laid down their lives in the fight for a free and democratic South Africa.
Premier Mchunu was speaking at the Amadelakufa Awards Ceremony held at the Greyville Convention Centre. The awards paid tribute to struggle stalwarts.
“As government, we view Amadalekufa Awards as one of the tools that will assist in our efforts aimed at the preservation and promotion of our history. We need to teach the younger generations about our leaders such as the first ever African recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize – Inkosi Mvumbi Luthuli,” said the Premier on Saturday.
The Premier said that individuals like Luthuli was a firm believer in unity.
“The ceremony is timely as it takes place few days after the commemoration of the release of from prison of the former President Nelson Mandela. The month of February will remain engraved in our minds as it marked the beginning of the total dismantling of the apartheid regime,” he said.
Premier Mchunu said that the month of February marked the unbanning of the ANC and the South African Communist Party.
“Having these awards this month is a fitting tribute to many liberation stalwarts, who sacrificed their lives in the fight for a free and democratic South Africa. Equally, we respectfully bow our heads to all the recipients of Amadelakufa Awards – past and present. We salute these visionaries for being beacons of hope and living symbols of the triumph of the human spirit against adversity.” – SAnews.gov.za
