Pretoria - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu is expected to visit the families of the victims of road accidents along the N2 Nonoti in KwaDukuza.

“I will dedicate the whole day meeting with the families of the victims to personally convey my deepest sympathy. I will also convey messages of condolences from the people of KwaZulu-Natal,” said the Premier on Sunday.

The Premier welcomed the support from religious leaders who have offered to join him in praying for the families.

“We will also visit families of the victims who are still in hospital,” he said.

The Premier on Saturday ordered an investigation into the accident on Friday evening which left two people dead.

“There are many unanswered questions and confusing reports around separate accidents along this route. It is for this reason that I have instructed my Special Advisor on Good Governance Advocate Linda Zama to liaise with law enforcement agencies such as the SAPS and Road Traffic Inspectorate,” said the Premier in a statement on Saturday.

He said he would receive a briefing from Advocate Zama on the progress of the investigation today.

The Premier expressed his appreciation to the clinicians and nursing staff at Stanger Hospital for their professionalism and sterling effort in assisting the injured. One victim of the accident has been discharged.

He further called on credible witnesses of the accidents that took place along N2 to come forward and work with the police. This as witnesses have been giving conflicting reports as to what happened.

“They must also assist with information that can lead to the arrest of the driver of the truck that allegedly drove away. The latest road accidents calls for government to intensify road safety campaigns as we approach the [upcoming] Easter weekend. We cannot afford the loss of innocent lives on our roads,” said the Premier.

In an earlier statement on Friday, the Premier said his office had received queries about an accident involving a vehicle used by his bodyguards.

The Premier’s office confirmed that a back-up car used by his protectors was involved in an accident and that the cause of the accident is being investigated by police.

At the time of the accident, the Premier was home after a meeting held under the auspices of the Premier’s Co-ordinating Forum.  – SAnews.gov.za
