Pretoria - Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises will on Monday kick off a four-day tour to various State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) beginning with South African Airways (SAA).

The committee is expected to hold a meeting with the board of SAA as well as conduct site visits to OR Tambo International Airport and the Transnet pipeline.

The visits to the SOEs as well as development projects are aimed at getting a clearer picture of their state of affairs. They also form part of Parliament's efforts to strengthen its oversight function.

On Tuesday, the committee will receive a briefing from the board and management of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) at Phelindaba. They will visit the site as well as at Koedespoort which is Transnet's engineering site.

On Wednesday the parliamentarians are to visit Eskom's Medupi and Matimba power stations. They will also hold a meeting with the Eskom board as well as management.

"The interaction with Eskom is expected to shed light on the nature of the power utility's challenges with regard to the funding model, tariff hikes and the infrastructure expansion programme, especially the progress on the construction of Medupi and Matimba," said the committee.

On Thursday, the committee will hold a meeting with the board and management of Transnet as well as conduct site visits to Port Nqgura and Port Elizabeth harbour.
