Durban - South African international star Steven Pienaar has completed his reported 3million pounds move from Everton to Tottenham Hotspur, ending weeks of speculation about his future.

The Bafana Bafana midfielder told his fans on social networking site Twitter: "To end speculation, I am going to Spurs. I've had brilliant years at Everton and it will always be a special place in my heart."

The North London club later confirmed on their website that an agreement has been reached with Everton. Pienaar is said to be on a four-and-a-half year contract at White Heart Lane.

English Premier League giant Chelsea also made a bid for the midfielder, who was nearing the end of his contract, but the deal fell through over personal terms.

Pienaar started his career at Ajax Cape Town in 1999 until 2001 before joining Ajax Amsterdam, where he made 94 appearances and scored 15 goals for the Dutch side.

The Bafana star signed with Everton on an initial season-long loan from German club Borussia Dortmund in 2007.

He was made permanent the following year on a 2million pounds contract.

Pienaar's marvelous 2009-10 season earned him the Everton's Player of the Year award.

Spurs are hoping that the South African will be granted a work permit in time for their clash against Newcastle United this weekend.

Pienaar also said that he would dawn the No 40 jersey at his new club.

Tottenham broke into the top four last season and continue their fight for their spot with only a point separating them from current fourth place Chelsea.

In their weekend clash they held Manchester United to a draw.

England international Jermain Defoe also took to Twitter to welcome the South African, calling
Pienaar's move a coup.

The striker said on his own Twitter account: ''Signings (sic) Steven Pienaar is a massive coup for Spurs. This deal really shows how far we have come when a top player rejects a big club 4 us."
