Pretoria - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has called on the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to speed up its investigation on the cause of the accident that killed Gauteng MEC for Economic Development Nkosiphendule Kolisile, his driver and bodyguard.
At the time of the accident, Kolisile, his driver and bodyguard were enroute to the Eastern Cape traveling on the N6 approximately 10km from Reddersburg towards Bloemfontein in the Free State.
Preliminary reports indicate that an SUV and a truck type vehicle collided head on resulting in the death of MEC Kolosile and his two protectors.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened with the South African Police Service.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has dispatched a team of crash and incident reconstruction and investigation experts to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Minister Peters has sent her heartfelt and sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of Kolisile and his protectors.
“The tragic passing of MEC Kolisile and his protectors is a monumental loss not only to the people of Gauteng but to the nation as a whole.
“We were still expecting the MEC to continue to make positive contributions to the ANC led government’s efforts to create a better society,” Peters said.
Peters said the death of MEC Kolisile and his protectors was yet another stark reminder of the challenges faced with on the roads.
“We repeat our call on all South Africans to come together and join hands to stop this carnage.
“One death on our roads is one too many, but if we work together we can save millions of lives,” she said.
The minister has called on every road user, motorists, passengers and pedestrians alike to take personal responsibility in road safety and ensure that South Africa’s roads are not turned into killing fields. – SAnews.gov.za
