Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has declared a state of disaster in several areas following the severe storms that struck Gauteng last week.
The decision to classify disaster zones was taken at a council meeting on Tuesday.
Extensive damage to property was reported in regions 1 and 6, affecting ±44 800 households. These households suffered a range of damages from roof tops, windows, solar geysers, cars and household items.
“As a city, we cannot let our residents bear the brunt of this natural occurrence and we have to assist where we can to repair the damages suffered,” said Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa.
The city has also allocated R100 million to assist the affected households in Mamelodi and Soshanguve.
Officials have to date assisted some communities in distress by providing emergency relief to approximately 1 600 households in Mamelodi and Soshanguve.
Relief was provided in the form of plastic-sheeting for roofs and windows, blankets, mattresses and food parcels.
The Falala Community Hall in Soshanguve was used as a temporary shelter and blankets were provided to 700 people. – SAnews.gov.za
