Pretoria - National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) President Andile Lungisa has been elected President of the Pan-African Youth Union (PYU).

The PYU is a continental youth body recognised by the African Union Heads of Government and State to coordinate youth development in the African continent, which serves as a voice for young people.

It is the only focal point of the AU on youth that mobilises and builds the capacity of youth in Africa to be active players in the economic, political as well as cultural development and processes in the continent's development matters.

Lungisa was elected unopposed for a three-year term at the 3rd Pan-African Youth Union Congress held in Khartoum, Sudan. The gathering also elected Mali as the Secretary General; Namibia as the Sothern Region Vice President and Zimbabwe as Deputy Secretary General, among other countries.

Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane congratulated Lungisa, saying he had extensive experience both in youth development in South Africa and as former Deputy President of the PYU.

"His election is a clear indication of confidence in South Africa to lead youth development issues on the continent. Lungisa will definitely assist in ensuring that youth development matters receive the necessary attention in Africa. We congratulate him and wish him and his executive well in their new role."
