Operation Stopper to clean up Nyanga

Pretoria - Police have unveiled “Operation Stopper”, an initiative aimed at reducing crime in the Nyanga area, on the Cape Flats.

National Commissioner of Police, General Riah Phiyega, said the operation will see police being deployed into the area in their numbers for several months until the township is stabilised.

The intervention will also be extended to focus on Brown's Farm and Samora Machel as the primary hotspots.

For many years Nyanga has been dubbed the murder capital of South Africa.

According to police, since August 22, illegal fire arms were seized, in addition 43kg of dagga, and other drugs like heroin, tick and mandrax were confiscated in the area. About 18 suspects have been arrests in this regard. – SAnews.gov.za
