Police evaluate Operation Stopper

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Pretoria - Police Deputy Minister Makhotso Maggie Sotyu will be in Nyanga, Cape Town, this morning to inspect and get a progress report of Operation Stopper.

The main objective of Operation Stopper, which was launched in September 2014, is to clamp down on crime in the Nyanga cluster -- an area that is notorious for its high murder rate.

The operation has seen a significant number of police being deployed in the area for several months until the township is stabilised.

"It is the goal of the Ministry of Police to ensure that constraints that are faced by the police in the Nyanga cluster in effectively implementing Operation Stopper are immediately brought to the attention of the executive for immediate attention and intervention.

“Therefore, matters of resources, personnel capacity and limited adequate infrastructure to respond to crime complaints must be comprehensively attended to,” said Deputy Minister Sotyu ahead of her visit to the area on Tuesday.

Deputy Minister Sotyu will also take time to visit the murder scene and the families of the three men who were shot and killed in Cubungu Street, KTC, while watching a Springboks match.

The Deputy Minister will be accompanied by the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police, some Members of Parliament and community leaders. - SAnews.gov.za
