Pretoria – The Department of Correctional Services says the rapid response by officials to a gang fight at the Leeuwkop Medium A Correctional Centre led to the prevention of serious injuries to inmates.
According to preliminary investigations conducted by the Gauteng regional department, it is alleged that a gang fight occurred in one of the cells at Leeuwkop on Tuesday night.
Offenders sustained injuries as a result of stabbing by window panes. Two inmates, who sustained minor injuries, were taken to a local hospital for treatment and are back in custody.
Correctional officials responded swiftly to the incident after the alarm was raised. A search operation was also conducted.
The department refuted media reports that there had been an escape at the centre, adding that investigations are continuing.
“Correctional Services remains committed to ensuring that the safety and security of inmates, officials and service providers in all its 243 correctional centres, is not compromised. Offenders and officials who flout any rules and regulations of the department, will face the consequences of their actions,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za
