NW road construction projects on track

Pretoria - The process of declaring 25 strategic roads in the province as national roads have been completed, says North West Premier Thandi Modise.

According to Modise, the South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL) will now commence with reconstruction covering 1351,7 kilometres of the provincial road network.

"The roll out of road construction projects is part of implementing the Strategic Infrastructure Project (SIP4) aimed at accelerating investment in infrastructure to unlock economic potential and support the development of mining, agricultural activities and tourism opportunities and open up beneficiation opportunities in the province," she said.

SANRAL recently reported to the Extended Exco Lekgotla that the organisation was implementing eight road maintenance projects across the province that involve road repair and resealing.

The R970 million road repair projects include the Bloemhof to Rietpan, Delayville to Sannieshof and the Ventersdorp to Krugersdorp road which is nearing completion.

Meanwhile, over R1billion has been budgeted for the SANRAL-Bakwena Toll projects on the N4 for construction of an additional carriageway covering 32 kilometers between Brits and Marikana.

This also covers the construction of 22 kilometres between Zeerust and Rustenburg, Rehabilitation of the N4 between Brits and Marikana as well as Swartruggens including periodic and routine maintenance.

Most of the projects on the N4 which are at different stages and are expected to be completed next year. - SAnews.gov.za
