Pretoria - In an effort to intensify zero tolerance operations ahead of the New Year celebrations, traffic police in the North West nabbed three motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol on Tuesday.
A 51-year-old man driving a VW Golf with three occupants from Brits to Mabopane was pulled over on the Brits-Mothotlung-Mmakau road at around 6 pm.
Again a 32-year-old motorist who was driving a Nissan bakkie with four occupants was apprehended in Oukasie at 7:30 pm, while a 25-year-old driving a Fiat Uno from Brits to Mothotlung was arrested on the R566 Brits-Rosslyn road.
The three arrested motorists after breathaliser tests conducted at the respective road side inspections confirmed that they were intoxicated.
They were taken to Brits Provincial Hospital for blood sample extractions before they were locked up at the Brits Police Station.
They are expected to appear before the Brits Magistrates Court on Wednesday to answer to charges of drunken driving.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Desbo Mohono has called on law enforcement officers to stamp their authority against lawlessness and against crime ahead of and beyond festivities to welcome the New Year.
Over 40 drunken drivers have thus far been arrested across the province since the provincial Road traffic management authorities embarked on Project 15/15 operations for maximum visibility in order to miminise road accidents and fatalities.
