NSFAS deadline looms

Wednesday, November 21, 2018

With 9 days left before the closing of 2019 applications cycle, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has called on all students, who have not yet applied for financial aid, to submit their online applications before the closing date.

The 2019 applications cycle opened on 1 September 2018, with the closing date announced to be 30 November 2018.

NSFAS spokesperson Kagisho Mamabolo said from 1 September until 20 November 2018, the financial aid scheme has received 262 658 applications, with over 150 000 applications being evaluated.

“A total of 44 702 applications are missing supporting documents. As a mitigation plan, we have since communicated to these applicants to submit the required missing documents. We will continue to send out communications through the course of the application cycle.

“On average, NSFAS has been receiving 3 500 applications a day, with the number increasing drastically to 5 000 a day, which is also significantly higher than the 2018 application cycle,” Mamabolo said on Tuesday.

Mamabolo called on students to submit their online applications or visit their nearest National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) centres before the closing date.

“It is imperative to note that NSFAS will not accept any late applications after 30 November 2018 deadline.”

What is important for applicants:

  • Do not change your cell phone number or email address used for the application. These will be used by NSFAS to communicate the result of your application to you.
  • Applicants who wish to inquire about their application status, or contest funding decisions can do so by calling NSFAS contact centre toll free number 0860 007 327.
  • NSFAS will only fund applicants who have been accepted on an approved course at a university or a TVET college.
