Not plain sailing in Maths exam

Friday, October 28, 2011

Pretoria - While there were mixed views on whether the Mathematics paper written today was more difficult than the one written in the preliminary exams, all Grade 12 learners agreed that the Mathematics and Mathematics Literacy Paper 1 was difficult.

Learners, who sat for a three hour exam this morning, said they were hoping to make it up on Monday when they sit for Paper 2.

Thobile Phiri from Ndodakusuka High School in KwaZulu-Natal said she could not even tell how much she would get as the paper was very difficult.

"I've managed to write some but it was very difficult...maybe I was nervous because I did well in English but I'm hoping to make it up on Paper 2," said Phiri.

Her school mates, Nobuhle Mthethwa, shared the same sentiments, saying: "It was difficult compared to the preliminary exams, especially the graphs. I will be lucky if I get 31 percent."

She added that she was not going to fail as she will sail through in the remaining subjects.

Although Thabo Mokoena from SA College Private School felt that today's paper was much easier than the preliminary exams, he did not expect to achieve 70 percent.

"I might get 62 percent, hopefully Paper 2 will be better."

For Conrad Bezuidenhout from Waterkloof Hoerskool, the only percent he is working on during these exams is 80.

"It was okay, but a little difficult but I think I did well as I'm working on getting a distinction in all the subjects," said a confident Bezuidenhout.

Learners, registered for foreign languages are currently siting for a two hour paper in Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu, Tamil, Telegu HL, FAL, SAL P1 Arabic, French, Italian, Spanish, Modern Greek SAL P1 and Latin SAL P1.

The exams started on 17 October 2011 with practical tests and will be completed on 1 December 2011.
