Mafikeng - The North West Provincial Government has condemned the setting alight of parts of the building that houses the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality in Mafikeng.

A fire broke out at the municipal offices at around 1pm on Friday. Captain Mable Mosidi of the Mafikeng Police Station said a case of arson had been opened.

According to Captain Mosidi, security guards alerted the police when they saw flames coming from the building and the emergency services responded.

Provincial police said the reception area as well as the finance office of the municipal offices was burnt and computers and furniture were damaged.

"This morning local forensic investigators were at the scene inspecting for possible cause of the fire," the provincial police said.

Spokesperson for the North West Provincial Government, Cornelius Tanana Monama said the province was confident that all those responsible for the act would be brought to book.

"The provincial government calls on all our people to remain calm and allow our law-enforcement agencies to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

"We wish to assure all law-abiding citizens of our province that the provincial government will continue to intervene in our municipalities in order to restore stability and improve service delivery," Mr Monama said.

The provincial government placed the municipality under administration earlier this year.
