No World Cup cash for ministers: Cabinet

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Pretoria - Cabinet has resolved that no minister will accept any form of payment for their role in the Local Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup, said government spokesperson Themba Maseko.

Maseko, who was addressing a post-Cabinet briefing on Thursday, said Cabinet has noted reports suggesting that ministers and other members of the LOC were in line to receive large bonuses after the World Cup, but since then cabinet has resolved that none should accept them.

The row broke out last week when it was reported that certain officials serving the LOC, which includes several cabinet ministers, would pocket millions of Rands from world controlling soccer body FIFA for hosting the World Cup.

Maseko said Minister Tokyo Sexwale, who chairs the remunerations' committee of the LOC, clarified that there was no such decision by the LOC Board.

Safa has distanced itself from the furore saying the issue of bonuses had not been discussed by executive and they would only look into the matter after the event.

In a statement last week, Safa CEO Leslie Sedibe said they will sit down and discuss the World Cup and the bonus issue some time in late July once the World Cup is over.

"The cost overlay of hosting this event to the strict requirements of FIFA has blown the budget by millions. I cannot give exact figures but we are well over budget.

"People are jumping the gun here as, who knows, there may not be a big bonus to share. We will have to wait and see," Sedibe said at the time.
